March Scholar’s Gild Lecture / Discussion

March Scholar’s Gild Discussion

Tuesday, March 18, 7:30 PM, Lower Gild Hall

The Scholars Gild will hold our next discussion on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:30 PM, in the lower Gild Hall.  We will have a guest speaker, Prof. Marshall Joseph Becker, who will make another contribution to our “Small World” series.

All are welcomed.

The Native People of Delaware

The Lenape are the best known of the many Native American tribes of the lower Delaware River valley who were here when Europeans first came into this region. The Lenape were only one of many hundreds of different tribes that were once spread across North America, and one of the four tribes of the region. This lecture will focus on the Lenape, how this specific group of foraging (hunting-fishing-gathering) people lived, when they left the region and where they went, and how their culture was different from that of all other tribes. These matters have been the subject of study for decades.  This research also revealed much about the Native peoples of New Jersey and Delaware, and how each of these culture histories was unique. This illustrated presentation offers the latest information on these important Indian tribes.

The presenter for this lecture / discussion is Prof. Marshall Joseph Becker. Prof. Becker has studied the native peoples of the Delaware River and Delaware Bay regions for more than 40 years. He was trained at The University of Pennsylvania in all four fields of anthropology and now applies multiple anthropological approaches to gather information about the Lenape (“Delaware Indians”) and their neighbors. Dr. Becker has published a book and nearly 200 articles on the Lenape and other Native Americans, in both scholarly as well as popular journals. Dr. Becker’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, The American Philosophical Society, the National Geographic Society and the Social Science Research Council.

This lecture is part of the Scholars Gild “Small World” series, and is sponsored, in part, by the Delaware Humanities Counsel.
