How Advances in Fashion & Wearable Technology Can Improve Life for People With Disabilities

Tuesday, November 15
Lower Arden Gild Hall
7:30 PM

Everyday life activities with a physical disability can be difficult. The November Scholars Gild discussion will be lead by Dr. Michele Lobo, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. Dr. Lobo will discuss how advances in fashion/apparel studies, engineering, and rehabilitation can be used to design clothing that improves independence, function, and quality of life for people with disabilities, particularly for those with physical disabilities. She will highlight innovations from her Super Suits FUNctional Fashion and Wearable Technology Program at the University of Delaware. Those innovations range from lower-tech adaptive clothing designs through exoskeletal garments and smart garments that allow users to control gadgets in their environment.

Rethinking Justice

Christofer Johnson, Esq

The events of Ferguson, Missouri precipitated some major changes in policing in that city, with many of the personnel and procedures being changed. The series of young, often unarmed, black men being killed by police has led to investigations into police departments, with findings that show the reality of sometimes blatant racial disparities in arrest and incarceration rates. Our October discussion will look at some of the changes that have come about as a result of the current crisis, and discuss how the crisis came about.

Christofer (Chris) Johnson is the current Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Wilmington. He has broad responsibilities representing the City in complex litigation. In addition to these responsibilities, Chris has focused on anti-violence initiatives aimed at counseling high-risk youth. Chris is an active leader in the community, serving as a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem with the Delaware Office of Child Advocate and on the Board of Directors of the Delaware Center for Justice. Chris will lead our October discussion on the subject “Rethinking Justice” to better serve the high-risk youths in our community

There is no fee to attend Scholars Gild discussions; please consider making a donation at the door to help cover the costs of putting on these events and to support the Arden Club.
