Entropy Ensemble with Holly Brook
The Music of Radiohead
Saturday October 23 - 8 PM
$15 (only $12 for members)
Holly Brook opening - see bottom for info on Holly
According to the dictionary, entropy is defined as the loss of information in a transmitted message. Apply this definition to the contemporary music scene, and you have the motivation behind Entropy Ensemble.
Entropy Ensemble noticed this deterioration, and now strive to take todayâs music back to its classical formâ"pre-lyrics, unnecessary instruments, and other overpowering noise.
To a sold out Sotille Theatre in April of 2009, Entropy Ensemble performed select Radiohead songs, including There There and Paranoid Android. The altered songs"the melody, harmony, and texture are exposed in a classical light are part of the Radiohead Project, an attempt to strip down the popular band's stylings in a hybrid chamber music setting.
Andrew Walker, the brains behind the Radiohead Project, is the ensembleâs pianist and principal arranger. Fellow arranger Julia Harlow, cellist Lonnie Root, violinist Javier Orman, bassist Ben Wells, flutist Kim Alford, and drummer Stuart White all join Walker in Entropy Ensembleâs quest to strip mainstream music.
Entropy Ensemble furthered the Radiohead Project with their EP Between the Lines: The Instrumental Arrangements of Radioheadâ. The EP consists of the band's popular songs Idioteque, There There, and Reckoner. On Between the Lines, as with all music, Entropy Ensemble removes the digital, enhanced, and overworked elements, leaving sounds that are raw, unembellished and classically beautiful.

Holly Brook was born in the quaint and rural town of Mazomanie in Wisconsin in 1986. After an early introduction to music, Brook began to perform professionally with her mother, Candace, at age six. By 15, the mother-daughter duo had recorded three independent albums of folk music under the name, Generations.
Her auspicious beginnings, paired with the insight of a psychic medium, led to a move to Los Angeles. Shortly thereafter, working closely with Jonathan Ingoldsby, producer and songwriter, her career took a direct turn towards stardom, when rock kingpins, Linkin Park, recognized her talent, offering her a record deal with their label, Machine Shop/Warner Brothers. Holly began simultaneously working on rapper, Mike Shinodas solo project, Fort Minor, which resulted in her vocal collaboration on the hit single Whered You Go, which peaked at 2 on Billboards Hot 100 in 2006, propelling her into a whirlwind of touring, music videos, and major TV appearances.
On the wave of success and promise, Brook unveiled her first solo album Like Blood Like Honey, which in 2006 received widespread critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences nationwide.
That same year, the opportunity arose to link up with one of her favorite artists, Duncan Sheik. She has since toured with him extensively, and has played a major role in his most recent projects, collaborating on various musicals, movie scores, and records. Brooks vocals haunt nearly every track on Sheiks new album, Whisper House.
Now, with the help of Ingoldsby and Sheik, Brook is emerging with a new solo album, which is a collection of her own songs that chronicle the chaotic circumstances from past two years of her life. Her voice therapeutically translates pure emotion that results from having the burden of a high-powered magnetic device for personal drama. Through introspective lyrics and mellifluous melodies, she tells the tale of the inner workings of her mind, and paints the picture with a lush sonic palate of rich instrumental arrangements. The new album is undoubtedly a momentous accomplishment for Brook.
Richard Julian Band
Saturday November 6 - 8 PM
$17 (only $14 for members)
Girls Need Attention, Richard Julian's new album, is a musical atonement: vulnerable, honest, funny, and painfully direct as it chronicles an ill-fated love affair. I don't know how to not write confessionally... the songs always feel like a shopping cart that veers in that direction no matter which way I try to steer it. This, Julian's Compass Records debut and first album since 2008's Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes, still serves up the occasional helping of his razor-sharp wit but ultimately reveals the singer at his most emotionally-charged. This is by far the most raw I've ever been on an album, says Julian, and his uncloaked narration is served well by lean and elegant arrangements.
Recorded at Norah Jones's home studio,Girls Need Attention features stellar accompaniment from Nels Cline (Wilco) on guitar, Jolie Holland on box fiddle, and Sasha Dobson on vocals. The backing band, who was essentially paid in fine tequila, says Julian, a self-professed food and drink aficionado, contains such luminaries as Lee Alexander (who also produced the album), Tim Luntzel (bass) and Dan Rieser (drums), and is sparingly augmented throughout with keyboards (Dred Scott), baritone guitar, (Steve Elliot) french horn (Louis Schwadron), tuba (Marcus Rojas), and bass clarinet (Doug Wieselman). This star-studded cast is nothing out of the ordinary for Julian, who has spent the last few years touring with the likes of Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Josh Ritter, Roseanne Cash, and Suzanne Vega.
Eilen Jewell Band
Joy Kills Sorrow
Saturday December 4 - 8 PM
$20 (only $15 for members)
EILEN JEWELL BAND-Combine Boston Phoenixâ National Singer/Songwriter of the Year (Jewell) with a buncha top-notch roadhouse roots rockers, and you've got the Eilen Jewell Band. EJB weds Jewell's elegantly unflinching songwriting with a pre-Beatles swagger that captures vintage R & B, Midwestern garage rock, Chicago blues, and early rock and rockabilly, while maintaining the folk-inspired purity that first made Eilen an artist to watch.
JOY KILLS SORROW-After their triumphant opening for WPA, Joy Kills Sorrow returns with a critically-acclaimed new album, the riveting vocals of Emma Beaton, the award-winning songwriting (John Lennon Songwriting Contest winner) of Bridget Kearney, national mandolin champ Jacob Jolliff, and some of the most haunting songs and instrumental interplay youâll ever hear. And, Darkness Sure Becomes This City is in Symphony Steve's Top 10 for 2010. Need we say more?
