How to be a good consumer of statistics in the media? What are those numbers really saying?

Tuesday, November 19, 7:30 PM, Lower Gild Hall

Statistics are everywhere.  They are used to add credibility.  They influence our perception of products, politics, athletic performance, the weather, and many other everyday things.

Just how can we understand what we are told and sold?  How can we believe the “facts” we hear?

Steven Threefoot will present the simple concepts underlying the statistical analyses presented in the media. We will look at examples where statistical claims are used to instill credibility, and we will learn how to understand what is being said.  Understanding the simple concepts behind statistical analyses allows each of us to become an informed consumer of the claims. Everyone can understand these concepts and learn when to question the claims.

Join the November Scholars Gild discussion, and bring along your favorite statistic claim for our discussion.
