Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Miles Davis, 20th Century New Music, and Me: a tour lead by Mr. Ron Thomas

Please join the Scholars Gild at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, October 20, where we will be joined by musician, conductor, and teacher, Mr. Ron Thomas. Ron offers a presentation of remembrances about his studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen, his friendship with John Cage, and his association with the music of Miles Davis. A lively discussion of twentieth century trends in music and culture will provide context for the discussion of these three significant figures from the twentieth century musical scene. Photos and musical examples will provide an accompaniment to the discussion and personal remembrances.
Ron Thomas was encouraged in musical interests by his mother Helen, and his father Arja (Buddy) Thomas, a gifted amateur pianist and entertainer. Ron began piano studies at the age of six years. Ron entered the Manhattan School of Music in 1959 where he studied composition with Vittorio Gianinni, Nicolas Flagello, and Ludmila Ulehla. He studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen in the Spring of 1964 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The following year he was introduced to the then-recent music of Miles Davis and Bill Evans. He studied Composition with Stefan Wolpe and Raoul Pleskow, at C.W.Post College where he received his Master’s degree in 1970. The years since have been an extended elaboration upon these foundational elements through composing, jazz performance, teaching and writing about music.
The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) in the lower Gild Hall.
